Polycarbonates are used in the production of glassware (polypropylenecarbonate), in the electronic industry and CDs making, in the construction industry (mainly bisphenol-A-carbonate), in packaging, others.

Polycarbonates have been for long time produced by using phosgene. Also this field in now moving to new synthetic strategies based either on the direct co-polymerization of CO2 with epoxides or on the reaction of CO2 substitutes, such as organic carbonates, with poly-alcohols when the epoxide is not easily available (e.g., bisphenol-A).

Search for active catalysts that may assure regularity to the polymers is continuous and the use of less usual monomers is also attracting the attention of scientists as new monomers would lead to polymers with new properties.
